Sampling of Ophiura texturata was carried out during a two year cycle . Demographic structure is obtained using biometric method. The main parameter s of the population are computed . Plurimodal year classes are followed, and the periods of spawning and recruitment are defined . Bathymetric distribution taking into account the seasonal fluctuation is exposed. Segregation of the year classes and cohorts, and variations of their densities are demonstrated.

L'action de l'acétate de tributyle-étain, à des concentrations variant de 5 à 100 micro- grammes/l a été étudiée sur les oeufs de Crassostrea gigas en cours de fécondation. Parallèlement les mêmes concentrations ont été testées sur les larves D âgées de 24 heures.

L'acétate de tributyle-étain, qui entre dans la composition de certaines peintures antisalissures, est fortement toxique pour les oeufs et les larves D de Crassostrea gigas a la teneur de 5 p.p.b. (HIS et. ROBERT, 1980). Des concentrations inférieures, aussi basses que 1 microgramme par litre, ont été testées sur cette même espèce, mais aussi sur la moule, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

The Tributyl tin acetate, a component of certain antifouling paints, has deleterious effects on eggs and D shaped larvae from Crassostrea gigas at 5 p.p.b. (HIS & ROBERT, 1980). Here we have tested concentrations as low as 1 p.p.b. on eggs and on 24 hours old larvae both from Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis. The same results are got ; this product kills embryos and larvae in a few days ; it prevents growth of 24 hours old larvae exposed to this toxic. Mussels larvae seem to be less sensitive.

Experiments in the hatchery rearing of C. gigas larvae showed that: the antifouling paints represent a real danger for spatting areas; the larvae of Arcachon breeding stocks grown in the seawater taken from the Bay develop normally in the laboratory; and, the growth of the larvae, collected from the Bay of Arcachon and reared in hatchery at 18 degree C, confirms that the last summer temperature regimes could not explain the abnormalities. It also confirms the good quality of the seawater of the bay for C. gigas reproduction.

Estimation de la teneur en acétate de tributyle étain dans l'eau de mer, par une méthode biologique ArchiMer

L’acétate de tributyle-étain, composé actif de certaines peintures antisalissures, représente un danger certain pour les zones conchylicoles de captage (E. HIS et R. ROBERT, 1980 et R. ROBERT et E. HIS, 1981). Les méthodes chimiques actuelles ne sont pas assez sensibles pour permettre le dosage de ce produit dans l'eau de mer, au seuil de toxicité pour les larves d'huitres. Une échelle d'action pour douze concentrations comprises entre 100 ug/l. et 0,02 ug/ l., sur les véligères de Crassostrea gigas est proposée. Elle permet d’évaluer le degré de contamination de l'eau de mer d'un part de plaisance et son évolution.

Observations complementaires sur les causes possibles des anomalies de la reproduction de Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) dans le bassin d'Arcachon. ArchiMer

The spat production in the Bay of Arcachon has been recently disturbed. Bioassays using algae used as food for oyster larvae have shown that the organotin paints affect or inhibit growth of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans . Fresh waters coming into the bay and shore sediment did not affect the growth of these algae. Bioassays proposed by Woelke (1967) using embryos and larvae of Crassostrea gigas have shown that the quality of the sea water from Arcachon harbour has been improved a few months after the use of organotin paints has been prohibited. Likewise fresh waters are free from any micropollutants that could drastically disturb the reproduction of C. gigas in the bay.

Utilisation des élevages larvaires de Crassostrea gigas en écotoxicologie marine ArchiMer

The study of the anomalies occurring in the reproduction of Crassostrea gigas in the Arcachon Bay has been addressed through the development of some experimental protocols aimed at highlighting the action of a number of alteragenes on veligeres. The techniques used are described. They are based on the research of the action limits of the products tested on the breeding, formation and growth of oyster larvae. In addition, the sensitivity to micropollutants of the algae the veligere feed on is precised. Finally, larviculture and algae growth monitoring enabled the assessment of the quality of the sea-water and of the sediments in shellfish farming areas.

This paper describes a new technique for isolating unicellular algae which are thought to play a role ine the feeding fo bivalve larvae. The results are compared with the data obtained from experimental culture of bivalve larvae under controlled conditions. Effectively ingested algal strains can be isolated by this technique. The food value of one strain obtained as monsopecific culture is demonstrated.

Marine unicellular algae growth rates were studied with: a Coulter Counter in conjunction with a channelizer, and a hemacytometer. Compared to the hemacytometer a good precision of the culture density was observed when the Coulter Counter was used in conjunction with a channelizer. Nevertheless care had to be taken when determining the growth of the diatoms.

Corn culture has strongly developed in Aquitaine (France) over the past years, and lead to an increased use of pesticides and herbicides. One of the most commonly used formulations around the coast of the Arcachon Bay, an historical oyster spat capture zone, is the Atrazine-Simazine mix. The action limits of this product are defined on Crassostrea gigas larvae and on two nanoplankton test strains used in a controlled environment for their food, Isochrysis aff-galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans. Herbicides can indeed directly impact on oyster larvae, but they can also have a negative impact by interfering with the development of the algae used as aquaculture feed and feed for veligeres.

Croissance et spectre de tailles de six algues utilisees pour la nutrition de larves de bivalves en ecloserie, en culture non renouvelee ArchiMer

The growth and the size-frequency distribution of six unicellular marine algae, Isochrysis aff. galbana "Tahiti" nom. prov., Pavlova lutheri (Droop) Green, Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa nom. prov., Tetraselmis tetrathele (G.S. West) Butcher, Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano et Chaetoceros gracilis Schutt have been studied. Most of these species showed an increase in size during the stationary phase of growth. Because these data and anterior ones were achieved in similar experimental conditions, they were ranked by size and their growth performances discussed.

Studies concerned with unicellular algae as a food source for laval and post-larval stages of commercially valuable bivalves are reviewed. As only about ten species of microalgae are now produced in large quantities in commercial hatcheries, these are described and their main characteristics illustrated. The collection of Crassostrea gigas veligeres in their natural environment and the homogenate technique (HIS et al., 1985) enable the monospecific culture of nine algae which larvae feed on. Four of them could be mass-produced: Nannochloris atomus, Stichococcus bacillaris, Chlamidomonas bullosa and Tetraselmis Tetrathele. Their feeding quality has been tested using the cross-growth method, and using Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis veligeres. Although regularly found in the homogenates, and thus fed on by larvae, the first three algae gave poor results. Only Tetraselmis tetrathele has good nutritional qualities for Crassostrea gigas veligeres.

Croissance et spectre de taille de trois algues en cultures non renouvelées, utilisées pour la nutrition de larves de bivalves en écloserie ArchiMer

The different growth stages of three marine unicellular algae used in aquaculture, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum and tetraselmis suecica have been studied for 50 days under controlled culture conditions using a particle meter. At the same time, the size spectrum of the cells has been determined using a C 1000 scanner. The exponential growth stage is 11 days in the first two species, and 13 in the last one. Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum is the smallest with an average size of 3.5 µm. Its cellular volume is constant. The average size of Isochrysis galbana is 4.5 µm. An increase of the cellular volume is observed through its stationary stage. The modal size of Tetraselmis suecica is 8 µm. Again, an increase in the cellular...
